Since 1964, Legal Aid of Western Missouri has helped individuals and families build stability, protect their rights, and move forward with confidence through high-quality civil (non-criminal) legal services. By providing free legal representation to people facing financial hardship or life-changing challenges, Legal Aid helps ensure that justice is accessible to everyone—not just those who can afford it.
Legal Aid is guided by a dedicated volunteer Board of Trustees that champions fairness, opportunity, and equal access to the legal system. The Board helps strengthen our mission, uphold accountability to our clients, and advance solutions that empower underserved communities.
Our work is made possible through a diverse network of support, including federal, state, and local government funding, foundations, law firms, private donors, attorneys, and community partners who believe in equal justice for all.
Every day, Legal Aid’s attorneys, paralegals, administrative assistants, and intake staff combine professional excellence with compassion and respect. Clients come to us seeking guidance during difficult moments, and we work alongside them to provide advocacy, information, and pathways toward greater security and opportunity.

Legal Aid of Western Missouri has a long history of expanding access to justice and strengthening communities across western Missouri. Founded in 1910 as the Kansas City Legal Aid Bureau, it was the first legal aid program established west of the Mississippi River. Originally operating as part of the Board of Public Welfare, the organization was created to help ensure that individuals and families facing financial hardship could still access legal support and protection.
In the early 1960s, the Kansas City Bar Association conducted a comprehensive study of the unmet legal needs within the community. The findings reinforced the importance of creating a sustainable system of free civil legal services so that all people — regardless of income — could navigate the legal system with dignity and fairness. In 1964, Legal Aid established its 501(c)(3) status and secured foundational support through a Ford Foundation grant, the Jackson County Circuit Court, and the City of Kansas City.
As federal funding opportunities expanded in the 1970s, Legal Aid broadened its reach to serve 40 counties across the western third of Missouri and adopted the name Legal Aid of Western Missouri. Today, Legal Aid continues to meet communities where they are through offices located in Kansas City, Independence, St. Joseph, Warrensburg, and Joplin.
To create the greatest impact for individuals and families, Legal Aid’s Board of Trustees — working closely with clients, community partners, private attorneys, and staff — established priorities focused on the most urgent civil legal needs. These areas include housing stability, public benefits, immigration, domestic violence, consumer protection, and health-related legal issues. Alongside individual representation, Legal Aid also develops targeted projects and community-based initiatives that address emerging needs and create lasting opportunities for the people and neighborhoods we serve.
