“I have someone in my corner.” At a recent Board of Trustees meeting, an attorney for Legal Aid shared her experience with a client. As she was telling her client’s story, the attorney explained how her client felt like she finally had someone in her corner as the client navigated through the legal system. Based on the description of the client, she has had her fair share of ups and downs in life, but she was a fighter and a survivor. And in many situations, the client had to face these ups and downs on her own. Fortunately, when she was forced into her legal fight, she was not alone.
Legal Aid has provided a voice to many in our community that often feel voiceless. The Legal Aid staff and attorneys do not provide access to the courts with a financial incentive in mind. They provide representation with the hope of improving their client’s life and our community. Whether it is assisting a client obtain a protective order in a domestic dispute, helping a client get Medicaid benefits, or contesting an eviction, Legal Aid attorneys are there.
My own involvement with Legal Aid started approximately 9 years ago, and I have had the privilege of serving on the Board of Trustees for seven years. And I am constantly amazed by the passion and work of our staff and attorneys.
Also, I have always been amazed by the support Legal Aid has received from the Kansas City legal community. Regardless of practice area or the size of a firm, attorneys from across the region provide generous and much needed support to Legal Aid. With this support and the work of its staff, Legal Aid will continue to offer that assurance to clients that they have someone in their corner.
