The Ruskin Heights Homes Association needed assistance with a vacant, nuisance property on a major corridor right across from a neighborhood school. Legal Aid worked with volunteer attorneys from Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP to prepare and file a Missouri Abandoned Housing Act lawsuit on behalf of RHHA in order to clear and acquire title.
Since that time, RHHA has partnered with an urban homesteader who completed a full rehabilitation and has moved into the house with his family and will live there for at least two years per an agreement with the HOA.
The neighborhood benefits from the house no longer being a vacant nuisance, and the urban homesteader was able to move into homeownership with clear title at a low cost. In the process, Legal Aid and its volunteer attorneys also arranged for a municipal lien waiver for the house, as well as a satisfaction of delinquent HOA dues
