In early 2020, Legal Aid worked with a volunteer attorney to file an Abandoned Housing Act lawsuit against the absentee owner of this house, an LLC out of Jefferson City. This house had also been fraudulently transferred to a known bad actor in town, so we filed to nullify the forged deed. A dedicated community partner fully rehabilitated the house and is currently leasing it to a healthcare worker from nearby Research Hospital. Because the neighborhood is within an Urban Renewal Area, the contractor also applied for ten years of tax abatement to prevent a future owner from facing prohibitively high property taxes.
